Women’s groupings and starting times
Ten VSGA members — five men and five women — will begin their quest for USGA titles this weekend.
Pat Tallent (Westwood CC), the 2014 U.S. Senior Amateur champion, will look to make it two titles in three years as he begins play at the U.S. Senior Amateur Championship at Old Warson Country Club in St. Louis. The event begins Saturday with two rounds of stroke play, with the top 64 competitors advancing to match play beginning Monday. Tallent started the U.S. Senior Open and missed the cut, and he withdrew from the U.S. Mid-Amateur before it began.
He’s one of two past U.S. Senior Amateur champions from Virginia in the field. Vinny Giles (Kinloch GC), who won the title in 2009, is the other. Giles, who was inducted into the Virginia Golf Hall of Fame in May, reached the round of 16 at this year’s VSGA Senior Amateur and was a playing captain for the winning U.S. side at the Concession Cup in April.
Two Virginians who played in the U.S. Mid-Am but missed the cut — Matt Sughrue (1757 GC) and James Gallagher (Tidewater Amateur Golf Tour) — are in the field this weekend. Gary Cicatiello (Brickshire GC) rounds out the VSGA contingent in the U.S. Senior Amateur. Gallagher recently took second in the Canadian Senior Amateur Championship.
Mary Cabriele (CC of Fairfax), who has won the last two VSGA Senior Women’s Stroke Play titles, headlines the VSGA contingent in the U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur, which will be held at Wellesley Country Club in Massachusetts.
Also in the field are Lindsay Wortham (CC of Virginia), Susan Podolsky (Mount Vernon CC), Joanne Kitusky (The Dominion Club) and Amy Ellertson (Farmington CC). Wortham was a semifinalist at the VSGA Senior Women’s Amateur Championship in July. Like the men’s event, the women will go through two rounds of stroke play, with the top 64 advancing to match play beginning Monday.
