Carolinas win 21st Mid-Atlantic Girls' Challenge

WAYNESBORO -- The Carolinas rode a strong Sunday of singles play to an 8-4 win in the 21st Mid-Atlantic Girls' Challenge Matches, held Saturday and Sunday at Orchard Creek.

The matches featured four players each from the Virginia State Golf Association and Maryland State Golf Association battling against eight players from the Carolinas' Golf Associaion.

The CGA team won six of the eight singles matches. Mia Gray, Ellen Yu, Anna Howerton, Leah Edwards, Skye Two Hawks Skenandore and Annalee Caveney each won their matches, with only one reaching the 18th hole (Yu's 1-up win over Julie Shin).

Kathryn Ha and Elsie MacCleery won their matches for the Virginia-Maryland side. MacCleery, who recently won the VSGA Junior Girls' Championship, was playing on her home course.

The teams went into Sunday tied at 2-2 after splitting Saturday's four-ball matches. MacCleery and Abigail Avallone won their match for Virginia/Maryland, as did Ha and Fannie Sukhumparnich. Howerton/Gray and Caveney/Skenandore won their matches for the Carolinas.

The Carolinas now hold a 16-4-2 lead in the series and have won the last four meetings. The matches were tied in 2018. Virginia/Maryland's last win came in 2015. The Carolinas are 9-0-1 when the matches are contested in Virginia.
