Mount Vernon Country Club Wins the 67th VSGA Women’s State Team Matches

ALEXANDRIA –– The six-golfer Mount Vernon Country Club team bested Army Navy Country Club by eight points (31-23) to claim Thursday’s championship flight final at the 67th Virginia State Golf Association Women’s State Team Matches at Mount Vernon Country Club.

mtvernoninsideMount Vernon, based in Alexandria, claimed its fifth victory in the past six years, having collected three consecutive victories from 2008-10 before triumphing each of the past two years. Altogether, Mount Vernon owns 11 titles in the matches, with seven of their wins coming since 2000.

Mount Vernon won two of the three deciding matches in taking home the Nancy Hollenbeck Trophy. In the format, each club is comprised of three two-player teams with each hole worth a single point for 54 points total.

Army Navy got off to a strong start, with reigning VSGA Senior Women’s Amateur winner Shelley Savage (Alexandria) teaming with Angela Baskette (Arlington) to best Alexandria residents Shawn McCullough and Susan Podolsky by five points (11½-6½). Savage and Baskette combined for a team-best 20½ points for Army Navy during the two-day match play portion of the competition on Wednesday and Thursday.

Mount Vernon continued to show the depth of its lineup, with Alexandria residents Katie Cox and Joan Gardner partnering together for a team-high eight-point victory (13-5) on the deciding day over Arlington’s Judi Enright and Malie Fries. In the closing match, Linda DiVall (Alexandria) and Kim Franks (Springfield) bested Son Hee Phillips (Springfield) and Shelley Sanders (Fairfax) by five points, 11½-6½. DiVall-Franks paced Mount Vernon, accounting for a combined 27 points in the final two days of the event, while Cox and Gardner, the Mount Vernon captain, added 26½ points in their own right.

“To be able to bond, play our course and play with people that you’re comfortable with and you know you can rely upon meant everything,” DiVall said. “It’s a very special day to have (the event) at your home course and to play a tough team.

“You still have to prepare. It’s a championship event and you have to take each shot seriously and we had the mindset of treating it just that way.”

In other flight action, Williamsburg Club took the first flight, while the Country Club of Fairfax captured flight two. Central Virginia’s Belmont Golf Course triumphed in third flight action, while Richmond-based Willow Oaks Country Club won the fourth flight.

Golfers representing 20 VSGA member clubs throughout the commonwealth took part in the event.
